The power of words

web-share-joy-ornament“All that we are is the result of what we have thought: it is founded on our thoughts, it is made up of our thoughts.” Wisdom of the Buddha (Dhammapada)

“In the beginning was the word and the word was made flesh.” The Bible

How powerful are the words we use?  I have seen people fly into rages or burst into tears over what another has said.  What we hear externally and internally have a great impact on our health.

With today’s tech it is easy to choose what external words we hear by turning the channel and controlling our newsfeed.  These external words begin to shape our internal thoughts.  How can we tell the difference between our true nature and this external influence?  Through the ancient science of meditation.

As a life long meditator my experience is that meditation isn’t about controlling your thoughts.  Meditation is about not allowing your thoughts to control you.   Meditation also gives you the awareness to know when other’s thoughts and words are influencing you.

One of my favorite ways to meditate is the mantra.  The repeating of a phrase or word over and over, drowning the constant thoughts that invade your mind. This practice has found its way into my art with hand made stamps of my favorite words on clay surfaces.  My intention is to allow these words to influence life in a positive and uplifting way.
